Writing Desk

Escape to a remote workspace and find a new approach to storytelling.

Molokai is one of the least populous islands in the state, making it the perfect place for writers to tune out and zone in. Start your day at your desk, then spend afternoons meeting local storytellers and learning about the land. The Writing Desk gives you the right amount of solitude — so you won’t have any excuses not to finish that “rough draft.”

Please note: Applications for 2018 are now closed.

Your Workspace

You’ll have your own cabin on Puu O Hoku Ranch, a family-owned property that spans 14,000 acres. Every aspect of your workspace is designed to help you channel maximum productivity, from the nearly silent surroundings to the serene view.

What You'll Do

Uncover local legends with father and son

Spend an afternoon with renown cultural liaisons Pilipo and Greg Solatorio, immersing yourself in their off-the-grid lifestyle. While Greg teaches you about the island’s natural beauty, his father will walk you through its history, giving you the backstory on the spiritual ground.

While the Solatorios tend to the local land, they wouldn’t say they “own” it — Hawaiians avoid using language about possession, and there’s no Hawaiian word that means “to own.”

Hike into the scenic Halawa Valley

Hiking has been proven to change physiology and decrease stress, both of which can help with writer’s block. You’ll journey into Halawa Valley on a curated hike, passing refreshing ponds, stunning waterfalls, and other natural wonders along the way.

Work without WiFi

Sometimes you need to unplug completely, and even a secluded cabin isn’t remote enough. That’s why this residency includes a second workspace without WiFi, located on the shoreline, a quick walk from your door.

Get premium caffeine

A writing day is only as good as its coffee, so you’ll only drink Molokai's best. Grown from rich volcanic soil, this rare bean will give you the energy to tell your story.

Molokai’s coffee is grown from Red Catuai beans, which are sometimes considered the "Cabernet of Coffee” due to their sweet taste.
